Modnation Racers: Ps3 or PSP?

Modnation Racers. An all new Play, Create, Share game for the Playstation 3 & PSP is coming just round the corner. If you haven't heard of Modnation Racers yet, then it pleases me to be the first. ;)

Its been a long time since Mario Kart that we had any new kart racing game which sets a BENCHMARK for its genre. Modnation Racers is an EVOLVED kart racing game, primarily because of its polished visuals of a video game of this day & age which has also a taken references from other already successful games. Taking its appeal from games such as Burnout, Mario Kart & Little Big Planet. Fusing a formula that works for experienced and casual gamers alike. There are tons of reviews about this game that has garnered such a significant amount of interest, it'll be hard to not notice!

Where is all this attention coming from? If you enjoy
- action racing games like Burnout where you can takedown opponents, perform insane drifts and hangtime to collect boosts
- you like creating your own characters and racecars and playing them online with other ppl
- you like to create racetracks for hours & share them with the world
- you like the art style of Urban Vinyl Art and you generally like cartoons or thinks Little Big Planet is cute

Modnation Racers has all the elements which are right up your alley!

The only thing left to do now is to buy this game on its release date at May 25th! But which versions are you likely to be getting for that bang in your buck? the PS3 or the PSP?

I've personally seen the introduction and tutorial videos downloaded from PSN and Youtube. I have played the demo on the PSP which I have to say is one of the best looking games for a portable. But then again I look at the PS3 gameplay videos and I am once again stuck with a dilemma.

I have both the PS3 and the PSP. To be able to play on the portable means you can bring them anywhere. You can create tracks, mods and karts on the go and you are able to play single player career scoring takedown points and unlocking more props for your mods as you advance. This means HOURS of time on the PSP outdoors while being able to play them online or share your creations if you have access to a WiFi spot or when you get back home later. This is a sure battery killa for the portable!

Playing Modnation Racers on the PS3 is what this game ought to be! The visuals and the drifting really has an "arcade" feel and response to it similar to Burnout. The controls and collisions are rather more polished for the PS3 than the portable. The track creation enables you to create "elevated" tracks, meaning a track could intersect like a ramp that enables hangtime over another track which is a cool feature for the console. The PSP created track does not intersect and elevate. But they have tons of props that acts as a ramp similar to the console. So you still get plenty of airtime here.

The PS3 characters also looks a little better than the PSP. But these comes down to cosmetics that doesn't necessarily affect the gameplay. Or does it? The controls for both versions differ, with the PS3 version a little more polished than the portable version. But with the portable version you could bring it just about anywhere and stay engrossed in it for hours!

So its really a tough choice but you're essentially playing a same game. You compromise a few things as always with portability, but you could spend more time with it than with the console. You will also have to consider whether you are the only person playing this game or are you the ones that often play with your friends and family? I have a couple of games for the PS3 that I end up NOT playing them because it sits in a living room where everybody is, but I buy games for my PSP from the PSN Store and I play with them for hours.

I have a sister who pesters me to get the PS3 version since she would be bored at home during the holidays! And since MGS Peace Walker is due release for the PSP around summer. I guess I have already decided on which Modnation Racer to go for.

Nonetheless, its going to be a great SUMMER for PS owners ;)
